The ChronoSync Documents Folder An explanation of the ChronoSync Documents folder and its location

TNCS-0035 – The ChronoSync Documents Folder

Created: October 17, 2016

This tech note explains what the ChronoSync Documents folder is, where it has been moved, why it has been moved and how to specify a custom location.

ALL ABOUT THE CHRONOSYNC DOCUMENTS FOLDER

The ChronoSync Documents folder is a central repository created by ChronoSync that contains all of your saved synchronizer documents. Its purpose is to keep all your documents in one convenient location.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

ChronoSync now stores the ChronoSync Documents folder within the user’s Library folder. The path is: ‘~/Library/Application Support/ChronoSync/Tasks’.

WHY WAS IT MOVED?

Prior to ChronoSync v4.7, the ChronoSync Documents folder was located within your user’s ‘Documents’ folder. When macOS Sierra introduced the “Documents-in-the-Cloud” feature, we realized that ChronoSync documents would get synchronized with iCloud. In addition to using up precious cloud storage space, this could be dangerous when synchronized between multiple Macs.

Moving the ChronoSync Documents folder is also done in preparation for future releases of ChronoSync. Future versions of ChronoSync will manage the handling of documents differently.

SPECIFY A CUSTOM LOCATION

Upon launching v4.7, ChronoSync will ask you if you wish to move your documents. Confirm this is what you want and ChronoSync will automatically move them to the new location. Note that all references to these documents will also be updated (i.e Scheduled Documents and Document Organizer references) so you needn’t worry about updating elsewhere. If you aren’t sure yet what you wish to do, you can choose ‘Later’ so that you’ll be prompted the next time you launch ChronoSync.

If you ever wish to specify the location yourself, you can go to ‘Application Behavior’ under the General Preferences and ‘Choose…’ the desired folder for the “Maintain documents folder” setting. This is the preferred method of moving the documents – vs. moving via Finder – so that you can be sure all references to the documents get updated.
