Save Enhancements Back Into iPhoto

Portraits & Prints is designed so that any enhancements made to photographs in your catalogs do not affect the original image. The enhancements are only applied when printing and viewing on screen. This allows you to alter the appearance of your photographs in a variety of ways without ever modifying the original image.

The "Save-back" function is basically a shortcut for exporting changes back to the original files. It can be used to save enhancements and transformations made to photos in Portraits & Prints back to the original image file for use in any application, including iPhoto. If you want to create new image files and preserve your orignals, you can also Export images from Portraits & Prints to one of several image file formats.

Caution: Before you get started it is very important to realize that anytime you use the "Save-back" command it will replace the original image with the changes you just made. Once you do this, the original image is gone forever unless you have a copy. When you "Save-back" into iPhoto it will replace the image in iPhoto with a new image showing the changes you made using Portraits & Prints. If you made some changes that you do not like, this can be devastating. To avoid this here are a couple of suggestions:
If you want to always have a copy of the original image you can keep a set on your hard drive and work with copies. ChronoSync is a good tool for maintaining a copy of your iPhoto library.
Use "Export" as an alternative to "Save-back" when you want to save enhancements to a new image file.
Understand that "Save-back" saves all the changed images in the catalog to the original files. "Export" saves only the selected images to new image files.

With all that said, follow these steps to take advantage of the "Save-back" feature.

Step 1. Enable Save-back

Start by making sure the feature is enabled (you only have to do this once). Choose "Preferences..." from the "Portraits & Prints" application menu and click on the "Enable Save-back function" checkbox.

Step 2. Add images

From iPhoto, open your chosen images in Portraits & Prints using either the Drag-n-Drop method or the Default Editing Application method. Check Tip#1 if you need help with this step.

To avoid accidental modifications of original images, the
Save-back function is disabled by default.

Customizing the toolbar by adding the "Save-back" icon.

Step 3. Modify images

Now select a photo from the Catalog, and make some modifications such as correcting red-eye or increasing the sharpness of the photograph.

NOTE: Cropping currently will not "Save-back". If you need to export cropped photos, use the Export command.

Step 4. Save-back images

When done with your changes, choose "Save-back" under the "File" menu, or you can click on the "Save-back" button on the toolbar (if you added it). Read the warning dialog that appears and click OK if you are really sure!

Step 5. View changes

Launch iPhoto and there you will find the updated photographs. You may also notice that since your photos are now in a Portraits & Prints catalog, any changes made using iPhoto are automatically recognized by Portraits & Prints.
