| Using Portraits & Prints with iPhoto | ||
|
Apple's release of iPhoto brings some useful photo cataloging and archiving capabilities to every Mac OS X user. The ability to generate slide shows, books and "1-Click" photo print ordering is certain to be a boon to many people. However, when it comes to actually printing digital photos on ink-jet printers, iPhoto's capabilities are somewhat limited. Luckily, Portraits & Prints can be used in conjunction with iPhoto! Portraits & Prints integrates so nicely with Apple's product that you would almost believe they were designed for each other. The primary purpose of Portraits & Prints is to output your digital photographs in a variety of ways. We feel it does this exceedingly well. iPhoto, on the other hand, excels at acquiring and cataloging digital photographs. With this in mind, we suggest that you use iPhoto as your primary photo management tool. Once you determine what photos you wish to print, however, you should use Portraits & Prints to get the job done. Here are some ways these two applications work together. |

One Click The simplest way to add photos from iPhoto is to click on the "Add iPhotos..." button on the toolbar and select the photos from the iPhoto selection sheet that appears. You can multi-select photos by holding down the SHIFT key. Once you select your photos, click "OK". Now your photos will appear in the Catalog Drawer so you can use them in Portraits & Prints. It's that easy! |

Drag-n-Drop Once you've isolated the photos to print in iPhoto, simply select and drag them to Portraits & Prints. You can drag the selected images to the Portraits & Prints icon in the Dock or in any Finder window. Portraits & Prints doesn't need to be running - it will launch automatically. |

Drag-n-Drop If Portraits & Prints is running, and a catalog window is open, you can also just drag the selection to the open window. |

Make Portraits & Prints Your Default Viewing Application Another option is to instruct iPhoto to open photographs in Portraits & Prints when they are double-clicked. To do this, open iPhoto's Preferences dialog by choosing "Preferences..." from the application menu. In the "Double-click" section, choose "Opens in other" then click "Select...". No matter which method you choose, once photos are in Portraits & Prints, you can manipulate them just as you normally would. Rotations, red-eye reductions, caption editing, auto-cropping, saturation, brightness and sharpening can all be applied in preparation for printing. You can then choose from a wide variety of layout templates to achieve perfect prints. |

| When photos are shared between the two programs such as this, all your modifications made in iPhoto will be automatically detected by Portraits & Prints. Thus if you rotate, crop or red-eye reduce in iPhoto, your changes will immediately appear in Portraits & Prints (once you bring it's catalog window to the foreground). Since the Portraits & Prints catalog is directly referencing the photographs in the iPhoto database, your photos won't be duplicated and the catalog files will be relatively small. The present version of Portraits & Prints does not modify the original files in any way - any enhancements made in Portraits & Prints will not appear in iPhoto. If you wish to retain these enhancements, check out Tip #2: Save Enhancements Back Into iPhoto which will show you how to use the "Save-back" feature to save your changes back to iPhoto.
