Syncing to an iPod

Music and data in your iPod can be synced effortlessly using ChronoSync. There are two uses to using ChronoSync in conjunction with your iPod. The first being that has the ability to backup data. The iPod is basically a hard drive, not unlike the hard drive found on your computer. Therefore it is able to store data on it. The second use is that the iPod can be used as a 'conduit' between the two computers. What this means is that it can be the intermediate stage when syncing two computers. Let's say, for example, that you have two desktops - one at the office and one at home. Since neither of these computers are easily portable, it would be difficult to get them together, connect them, and sync data. What is easier is using the iPod to temporarily store data from one computer to the other. It is much easier to carry an iPod than a desktop computer!

How the iPod Preferences panel should look.
Step 1. Set up your iPod. Connect your iPod to your computer. Once a connection has been made, launch iTunes. Open your iTune Preferences and choose the iPod icon. When the panel appears, go to the General tab and enable both of the preferences listed on the panel - "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached" and "Enable disk use".

Step 2. Place folder on your iPod. If you are planning to store a lot of data on your iPod it is probably wise to contain it all in a folder. That way it will be easily accesible when you need it. To add a folder to your iPod, follow these steps: first, double-click the iPod disk image on your desktop. Next, add a folder called "Backups" at the root level of your iPod. To do this, highlight the disk image while in Finder. Next, choose
"New Folder" from the file menu to name a new folder. Now select the "Backups" folder. All data that you sync will go into this folder. If you wish, you can add a sub-folder in the "Backups" folder. For example purposes, let's do this and we'll call this folder "example".
Double-clicking on the Desktop iPod disk image brings up a Finder window similar to what you see to the left. Highlight the "Backups" folder so that you can add a new folder to store all of your synchronized data.
Step 3. Set up your ChronoSync document. Launch ChronoSync. On the Setup panel, choose your left and right targets. This is done by clicking the respective "Choose..." button for each of the targets. This will drop down a file selection sheet for you to choose the files/folders you wish to have synchronized and where you would like for the data to be stored. The easiest way to do this is to make your computer the left target and your iPod the right target. If you do this, then you can choose the Direction of "Left-to-right". When choosing your right target, be sure to select the "example" folder that we created in Step 2.
Step 4. Run the synchronization. Once you have all the above-mentioned settings in place, perform the synchronization. This can be done by choosing the "Synchronize" icon in the toolbar.

Make Things Even MORE Easy!

Scheduling sync when iPod mounts. To make the whole synchronization process as simple as possible, you can set up a schedule so that when the iPod is mounted you can run a synchronization. To do this, choose "Add to Schedule..." from the toolbar. Doing this invokes the Add Scheduled Synchronization window. From the "Run Sync." popup menu select "When a Volume Mounts". Next, enable the "Right target mounts" option. This all means that a scheduled synchronization will run when the iPod volume (the right target) mounts.

That's it!
