Quick Setup.

ChronoSync performs synchronizations from a document you create and save. When you launch ChronoSync, a blank, "Untitled" document is created. You can also choose "New->Synchronizer" from the File menu. Once you create and save a Synchronizer document, you always run your synchronizations or backups from the same document. To stop the automatic creation of a new Untitled document at launch, uncheck “Create new document on activate” in Preferences.

1. Select your Targets
ChronoSync keeps the files stored at two locations, called Targets, synchronized with each other. A Target can be a folder or a volume on your Mac or anywhere else. This includes other Macs, PCs, external drives or even your iDisk. To select a target, click on the "Choose" button, or you can drag a folder or volume onto the target.

2. Synchronize Deletions
Check the "Synchronize deletions" checkbox if you want files that are deleted on one target to be deleted on the other target, too. In most cases you would want to check this box so that both targets stay identical.

3. Be Safe - Activate Archiving
Check the “Archive replaced files” checkbox to activate archiving. This is so that old files will be saved instead of deleted. They can be viewed and retrieved from the Archive panel. This will take up more hard drive space, but it is better to be safe than to lose that important file. You can change the Archive settings in the Options panel, under Archive Handling.

4. Select an Operation
The operation determines how your selected targets will be synchronized. The operation is selected from the popup menu labeled "Operation" at the very center of the Setup panel. The operation you choose depends entirely on the type of synchronization you wish to perform. Here is an explanation of all the Synchronizer Operations:

Backup Left-to-right - The left target will be monitored for changes and compared to the right target. Any changes detected will be copied to the right target.

Backup Right-to-left - The right target will be monitored for changes and compared to the left target. Any changes detected will be copied to the left target.

Synchronize Bidirectional - Both targets will be monitored for changes. Any changes detected will be copied to the opposite target.

Blind Backup Left-to-right - The left target will be monitored for changes. Any changes detected will be copied to the right target. Important: If a file in the right target is modified or deleted, it will not get replaced by the same file in the left target unless the left file has actually changed.

Blind Backup Right-to-left - The right target will be monitored for changes. Any changes detected will be copied to the left target. Important: If a file in the left target is modified or deleted, it will not get replaced by the same file in the right target unless the right file has actually changed.

Mirror Left-to-right - Files will only be copied left-to-right. If a file on either the left or right target is modified, it will result in the left file overwriting the right file.

Mirror Right-to-left - Files will only be copied right-to-left. If a file on either the left or right target is modified, it will result in the right file overwriting the left file.

Bootable Left-to-right - A bootable copy of the left target will be copied to the right target. Only volumes can be specified for this operation.
