Complete Control.
ChronoSync can mount another Mac using Apple File Sharing. That's easy enough, but you only get limited access and no encryption. Not anymore. ChronoAgent is a utility that runs on the destination Mac and communicates directly with ChronoSync giving you full access to the destination Mac and a direct connection that is safer, faster, and more reliable.
Who needs it?
So who needs ChronoAgent? Anyone who synchronizes or backups from one Mac to another Mac using ChronoSync.
Sure ChronoSync can mount other Macs automatically via Apple File Sharing and synchronize to them, but if you want a direct connection with full access to the destination Mac that is secure, fast, and reliable, then ChronoAgent is the answer. In fact the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent is the only Mac backup and sync app that offers all of this.
How it works.
ChronoSync runs on your Mac and will automatically connect to other Macs via Apple File Sharing and synchronize to them.
ChronoAgent runs on the destination Mac and connects directly with ChronoSync taking the place of Apple File Sharing.
Install and set up ChronoSync on the source Mac.
Using ChronoSync, set up a profile on the source Mac that communicates directly with ChronoAgent. You can set up multiple profiles to communicate with multiple Macs if needed.
Click here for complete setup instructions.
Install and set up ChronoAgent on the destination Mac or Macs.
ChronoAgent runs in the background as an invisible utility and is controlled in the System Preferences. Now your Mac running ChronoSync can connect automatically and directly with any Mac running ChronoAgent.
ChronoAgent only communicates with ChronoSync, meaning you need
to have ChronoSync in order to communicate with ChronoAgent.
Both are separate purchases. Click to learn more about ChronoSync.

Your data is safe.
ChronoSync can automatically mount another Mac using Apple® File Sharing. But if you use the combination of ChronoSync with ChronoAgent when connecting two Macs, the connection is safer, faster, and more reliable than using Apple File Sharing. How can we make this claim? Simple.
SAFER
Apple File Sharing does not encrypt file transfers whereas ChronoAgent does encrypt files before copying them between Macs so file transfers are safer.
FASTER
ChronoSync must scan both Macs when using Apple File Sharing whereas ChronoAgent scans the destination Mac at the same time ChronoSync scans the source Mac so file transfers are faster.
RELIABLE
Apple File Sharing gains limited access to a destination Mac so some files may be missed whereas the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent gives full access to both Macs ensuring a complete copy every time so backups and syncs are more reliable.
If you're synchronizing two Macs, sharing a folder on a Mac server between Macs, backing up one or more Macs to a Mac server, or even maintaining a bootle backup over a network, then the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent is the answer.
Locked out.
There are two steps in setting up ChronoAgent. First, from the destination Mac, you have to activate ChronoAgent and establish a name and password. Second, from the source Mac, you have to connect to ChronoAgent within ChronoSync Preferences by entering the ChronoAgent name and password. The password locks out unwanted users from connecting to your Mac.
Encrypt.
If security is an important concern then it is important to know that Apple File Sharing does not encrypt your file transfers. ChronoAgent offers four levels of SSL encryption so that files transferred over the network are encrypted.
It is true that encryption will slightly slow down file transfers, but the added security is worth it in most circumstances. When would you turn off encryption? If both Macs are on a secure network then there would be no need to encrypt.
Speed.
There are many factors that influence the speed of synchronizations and backups. For instance, the efficiency of your software, the speed of your Mac processor, the speed of your HD, the network speed, and more. Most of these are out of your control but the software is not. When connecting two Macs, the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent is faster than using ChronoSync with Apple File Sharing. ChronoSync scans files on the source Mac and communicates directly with ChronoAgent which scans files on the destination Mac. Without ChronoAgent, ChronoSync must scan all the files on both the source and destination using an Apple File Sharing connection. Simply stated, two guys are better than one.
Full Access to your Destination Mac.
The most common need for ChronoAgent is to gain access to another Mac that you synchronize with or back up to. When synchronizing files between two Macs, ChronoSync will communicate directly with ChronoAgent for fast and reliable synchronizations. Or maybe you backup your files to another Mac. ChronoSync can run on your Mac and ChronoAgent on the backup Mac.
The most common way to connect to another Mac is to turn on File Sharing. The problem is, File Sharing is limited so you will not have access to all the files on the destination Mac. So what's the deal about full access? If you gain full access to a Mac, you can copy any file — without full access some files are off limits. You don't want to miss any files when synchronizing or backing up. To get around this limitation, ChronoAgent runs directly on the destination Mac securing full access to the destination Mac. With the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent you get full access to both Macs.
If you're synchronizing two Macs, sharing a folder on a Mac server between Macs, backing up one or more Macs to a Mac server, or even maintaining a bootle backup over a network, then the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent is the answer.
Synchronize.
If you're synchronizing data between two Macs, then ChronoSync will communicate directly with ChronoAgent for fast and reliable synchronizations. You would install ChronoSync on your primary Mac and ChronoAgent on the other Mac.
Back up to another Mac.
If you back up your files to another Mac, ChronoSync can run on your Mac and ChronoAgent on the backup Mac. In addition to backing up to another Mac, you can back up to any external drives connected to another Mac.
Bootable Backup over a network.
ChronoSync can maintain a bootable backup of your Mac connected to an internal or external drive. But if you want to maintain a bootable backup over a network, then just add ChronoAgent to the destination Mac. ChronoAgent will give you full access to any internal or external drives connected to another Mac. No other backup solutions offer a complete bootable backup over a network.
Multiple Macs.
Maybe you need to back up a few Macs on a home network or a large number of Macs to a Mac file server. With ChronoSync running on the file server and ChronoAgent running on the Macs, you can back up your data automatically. You may also want to share a folder on a Mac file server with multiple Macs. Find out more about our enterprise solutions. Learn more...
It's all Automatic.
You can run your syncs manually with one click or schedule them to run automatically. With ChronoAgent you can even schedule your Mac to back up when it becomes available on a network. This is the perfect solution if you have MacBooks that need to get backed up but are not always available at a specific time. Just install ChronoAgent on a Mac and ChronoSync on the Mac you are backing up to. ChronoSync will detect when any Macs running ChronoAgent join the network and run a backup. Add email notifications and you have real peace of mind that all your Macs are getting backed up without any involvement from the users. That's automatic.
With ChronoSync and ChronoAgent, you get complete control over your Macs.
ChronoSync gives you many options to configure your synchronizations or backups. But you only have limited access to the destination Mac. ChronoAgent runs on the destination Mac so you get complete control over both the source and destination Macs.
Full Access.
The most common way to connect to another Mac is to turn on File Sharing. Unfortunately, File Sharing is limited so you will not have access to all the files on the destination Mac. So what's the deal about full access? If you gain full access to a Mac you can copy any file. Without full access some files are off limits based on permissions. You don't want to miss any files when synchronizing or backing up and you don't want to alter a file's permissions. To get around this limitation, ChronoAgent runs directly on the destination Mac securing full access to all the files on the destination Mac. With the combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent you get full access to both Macs.
Satellite.
Perhaps you want to take all the responsibility of backing up away from the user. You can then run ChronoSync on a Mac file server and install ChronoAgents on the individual Macs. The advantages of this method is the Mac file server has complete control over all the backups and users on the individual Macs have none. Schedule the backups to run at a specific time or better yet, use the "Sync When Available" option and the Macs will automatically backup when they join the network so you don't have to worry if Macs are available. Think of it this way, ChronoSync is the command center running on the primary Mac and ChronoAgent is the satellite running on one or more Macs.
Sync When Available.
There are an unlimited amount of ways to schedule your syncs or backups with ChronoSync. But with ChronoAgent you can schedule your Mac to back up when it becomes available on a network.
Profiles.
There are two steps in setting up ChronoAgent. First you have to turn on ChronoAgent and establish a name and password on the destination Mac. The password prevents unwanted users from connecting to your Mac. Second you have to set up a Connection Profile within ChronoSync Preferences on the source Mac. You can set up multiple profiles to communicate with multiple Macs if needed or set up multiple profiles for multiple users on a Mac. Within the Connection Profile, you enter the name and password, turn encryption on or off, and map Users and Groups between Macs. ChronoSync can automatically map or the advanced user can do this manually. The combination of ChronoSync and ChronoAgent gives you complete control between your Macs' users and a secure connection.
Automatic Backup Solutions.
Powerful
ChronoSync is a very powerful synchronization and backup application. So much so that it can be used with servers or multiple macs in an enterprise scenario. Not only can it cover almost any backup scenario, it is less expensive to implement. And if you add ChronoAgent to the mix, you get full access to both Source and Destination Macs. You can even maintain a bootable backup over a network. No one else can offer all that.
ChronoAgent is a utility that runs on the destination Mac and communicates directly with ChronoSync, giving you full root access to a destination Mac. Now you gain full access to both Macs and can copy anything. We recommend using ChronoAgent when connecting two Macs.
Solutions
Here are some common enterprise scenarios and solutions for backing up or sharing files between multiple Macs:
Backup multiple Macs to Mac Server
Maybe you need to back up multiple Macs to a Mac file server. With ChronoSync running on the Macs and ChronoAgent running on the file server, you can back up your data smoothly and quickly. If you want to share a folder on the Mac file server with multiple Macs, same situation — ChronoSync on the Macs and ChronoAgent on the Mac server. The advantage of this method is that every Mac has all the features of ChronoSync available such as scheduling, analyzing, restoring, or manually running a sync at any time.
Perhaps you want to take all the responsibility of backing up away from the user. You can then run ChronoSync on a Mac file server and install ChronoAgents on the individual Macs. The advantages of this method is the Mac file server has complete control over all the backups and users on the individual Macs have none. Schedule the backups to run at a specific time or better yet use the "Sync When Available" option and the Macs will automatically backup when they join the network.
Backup multiple Macs to a Network Area Storage (NAS)
If backing up to a NAS, just run ChronoSync on the user's Mac and mount the NAS. This would allow you to backup all the Macs directly to the NAS and have all the features of ChronoSync too.
As an alternative you could install ChronoSync on a Primary Mac connected to the NAS and ChronoAgent on all the user's Macs. This would allow you to control and backup all the user's Macs through a primary Mac to the NAS. With the addition of ChronoAgent, you could detect when a Mac joins a network and then have all your Macs backed up automatically whenever they join the network.
Backup multiple Macs to a Windows or Unix server
If you need to backup Macs to a computer not running Mac OS, then just install ChronoSync on every Mac and mount the server. This would allow you to backup all the Macs directly to the server. Additionally install ChronoAgent on a Primary Mac allowing you to backup all the Macs directly to the server but incorporate the ability to backup a Mac automatically when it joins the network.
